Mata Hari: A ballet in two acts

As a Resident Fellow at The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University, O’Regan completed his orchestral score for a new full-length narrative ballet based on the life of dancer, so-called courtesan and alleged World War One spy, Margaretha Zelle MacLeod (1876-1917), better known by her stage name of Mata Hari. The ballet, Mata Hari, has been commissioned by the Dutch National Ballet, 2016 (Het Nationale Ballet); it was choreographed by Ted Brandsen to a libretto by Janine Brogt and designed by Clement & Sanôu. The ballet was an evening-length work set to approximately 100 minutes of new music scored for large orchestra, divided into two equal acts, and opened its month-long run at Amsterdam’s Muziektheater in February 2016.
