About Durante Verzola

New York, NY

Durante Verzola, who is originally from Kansas, has choreographed works for Miami City Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet II, Ballet Dallas, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB), Miami City Ballet School, Ballet Chicago, Columbia Ballet Collaborative, Goucher College, School of Pennsylvania Ballet, and Peabody Dance. He is a winner of Joffrey Ballet’s Winning Works and has been selected for CPYB’s ChoreoPlan. Verzola has also been awarded a Kaatsbaan UpStream Residency, and has led Miami City Ballet School’s Choreographic Intensive since its inception.

Verzola began his training with Marisa Paull and continued at the Kansas City Ballet School and Kansas School of Classical Ballet. From an early age, Verzola trained with the Miami City Ballet School and attended summer courses at School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. He danced with Pennsylvania Ballet II and The Suzanne Farrell Ballet in works by Balanchine, Robbins, Wheeldon, Keigwin, and Petipa.

At CBA, Verzola choreographed a pas de deux with dancers from Miami City Ballet that explores and challenges its traditional, gendered structure of partnered dances. Inspired by the process of creating virtual work during the pandemic, the dancers will not touch. Verzola sought to inspire ideas and feelings of connection between the dancers, the music, and the audience through the movement.

Miami City Ballet nominated Durante Verzola to serve as an Artistic Partnership Initiative Fellow in Summer 2021.

The Artistic Partnership Initiative is a collaboration between CBA and professional dance companies around the world to advance the art of choreography. API Fellows are selected by companies’ artistic directors for their notable choreographic abilities and are awarded a 3-4 week residency to develop new work with the full resources of CBA and NYU.
