About Kimberly

Kimberly Bartosik is a choreographer, performer, educator, and writer whose work has been commissioned by BAM Next Wave, New York Live Arts, and American Dance Festival, among others, and toured to venues including MCA Chicago, the Walker Art Center, MASS MoCA/Jacob’s Pillow, and festivals in France, Italy, and Australia. She is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography, the Virginia B. Toulmin Women Leaders in Dance Fellowship at The Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU, and grants from NEFA, NYSCA, the Harkness Foundation, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, among others. A 2020 Bessie Award Honoree for Outstanding Production, Bartosik also received a Bessie Award for Exceptional Artistry as a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. She serves as an advisor for The Ailey School/Fordham BFA Program and teaches at SUNY Purchase and for the Merce Cunningham Trust, and her critical writing has recently appeared in Dance Magazine.

CBA Project

Le Soleil pour aïeul  / blood anchor
As a CBA Visiting Scholar, Kimberly Bartosik will focus on two new choreographic projects: Le Soleil pour aïeul and blood anchor. Bartosik will use access to CBA’s studio and dedicated office space to develop both works consistently while supporting her writing, research, and pursuit of funding and presentation opportunities.

Le Soleil pour aïeul is Violain Huisman’s theatrical adaptation of her novel The Book of Mother, opening with a choreographed solo, created by Bartosik, for actress April Mattis. The collaboration extends Bartosik’s ongoing research into the physicality of emotion, with a premiere tentatively planned for 2027.

blood anchor is a physically and emotionally visceral work for three performers from Bartosik’s touring piece bLUr (2025), exploring the complexity of blood relations amid a decade of familial and political fracture. Structured as interior maps anchored to moments of connection and rupture, and informed by Oliver Laxe’s film Sirāt, the work is in early development without a commissioning partner.
