About Aszure
Aszure Barton is an internationally acclaimed choreographer whose work has been performed on stages worldwide and in museums such as the Smithsonian, spanning dance, film, opera, and Broadway. In the early 2000s, she founded Aszure Barton & Artists in New York, a collaborative platform for process-centered creation that the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts described as revealing, “the physical unfurling of the human psyche.” She has been commissioned by leading companies and artists including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Misty Copeland, Nederlands Dans Theater, Paris Opera Ballet, and Teatro alla Scala. She currently serves as House Choreographer at Gauthier Dance | Theaterhaus Stuttgart, maintains a longtime relationship with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and was the first Martha Duffy artist in residence at Baryshnikov Arts. A dual Canadian-American citizen, Barton is a Bessie Award winner and recipient of the Arts & Letters award.

Root and Practice
This fellowship supports a sustained season in which Aszure Barton deepens her ongoing practice in collaboration with Aszure Barton & Artists (AB&A). The extended residency provides dedicated time over the course of the year to fully engage with her work, including the reentry and long-awaited New York premiere of BEND, her collaboration with composer and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Beyond this milestone, the residency offers Barton the opportunity to return to the city that shaped her artistic formation, creating space to reconnect with her practice and process, and to discover what emerges from that renewed engagement.
