About Emily Coates

New Haven, Connecticut

Emily Coates (CBA ’17) has performed internationally with New York City Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project, Twyla Tharp Dance, and Yvonne Rainer. Career highlights include performing three duets with Baryshnikov, in works by Mark Morris, Karole Armitage, and Erick Hawkins; principal roles in ballets by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins; Lucinda Childs’ seminal solo Carnation; and the breadth of Rainer’s work, from Trio A to her 21st century creations. Her solo and collaborative work has been presented by Danspace Project, Ballet Memphis, Performa, and Works & Process at the Guggenheim, among other venues. With particle physicist Sarah Demers, she is co-authoring a book on physics and dance, forthcoming from Yale University Press. She directs the dance studies curriculum at Yale and holds a secondary appointment at the Yale School of Drama.

Incarnations

At the Center, Coates worked on Incarnations, an evening-length piece that premiered at Danspace Project in March 2017. Moving between lecture and performance, pedagogy and art, the piece interweaved sources such as Balanchine’s 1928 ballet Apollo, the elusive body of Sir Isaac Newton, Stravinsky rehearsing Apollon musagète, the recent discovery of the Higgs boson, and Coates’ ongoing collaboration with particle physicist Sarah Demers. The project included dancers Iréne Hultman, Jon Kinzel, Lacina Coulibaly, and musician-composer Will Orzo.
